My Trip to New Orleans

Over the weekend, I went to New Orleans. Right after school, I went with my family to the airport. After our first flight we took another plane to New Orleans. When we got there, it was already midnight.

We went to the Mississippi River then next morning. There were old ferries that were taking people on tours. There was also a shipping yard where ships came in from the ocean to unload. There was a delta where the ships came through to get from the ocean into the river. We also went to the French Market. The French Market is a long tent where people set up stands and shops. It is in the French Quarter. I saw real alligator heads and claws. Then we went to the old U.S. Mint. It was a factory where they melt the metal and imprint them into coins. there was also a cafe where they sold beniets. After that when we went back, we passed through Bourbon Street. At night, people party and drink there.

The next day, we took a trolly around the old part of town. there was a parade on Canal street, where our hotel was, so we watched it. During the trip we also visited Loui Armstrong park. There was a pond and lots of memorials there. When we were driving back to the airport we passed the Mercedes Super Dome, where they hold the Super Bowl. In conclusion it was a unique trip. There were some strange characters who were selling drugs on the street, but it was a very historial experience.

Camp Hanes

The sixth grade waited excitedly with our bags for the buses to come that would take us to Camp Hanes. At eight o’clock the two big buses pulled up on the curb. We loaded our bags in the bottom of the bus and got on. After two hours, we arrived. There were mountains next to the camp. We unloaded the bags from the bus and took them to a room.

After we brought our bags to the cabins, we went to an outdoor area. It was really pretty, there were big green hills and a mountain looming over the camp. Our group went to the lake. The counselors told us how to get into the canoes. Then we got a partner and put our life jackets on. After we got into the boat, they untied the knot. Then we paddled away from the dock. Then we chased the other boats. Another boat rammed our boat and tried to grab our rope but my partner tied it in a knot. Then some other boats came and started ramming each other. But they drifted to the shore and got stuck. They tried to grab our boat again but it drifted away. Then we had to go back to the dock. Rock climbing was also fun because there was a very tall wall with belays where you can go up and down. On the side, there was a net with a mini wall where you could crawl on ropes and look down and watch the climbers  climb up the wall. On the way down, there was pixy stix where you can climb on wood poles. The activities were both really fun.

I have already slept away from home a couple times, but it was fun going with my friends. Campfire or the bus ride was my favorite because at campfire it was next to the lake. There were songs and skits. The buses had TVs. The cabins were spacious and cool. I liked the meal time because it was fun eating at the dining hall. It was fun going to an overnight camp! I can’t wait for the next one.

My Backpack

I read Finding Someplace during the summer. It is a fictional story that happened when Hurricane Katrina struck. In this book, the main character was Reesie Boone who lived in New Orleans. She had to pack her backpack when the hurricane struck. She packed important things like her birth certificate. She went to her neighbor’s house. She was rescued on a boat and went to the SuperDome but her backpack was stolen.

If I were in New Orleans when the hurricane happened, I would pack some important items too. I would pack a water bottle that kept water cold. I would also bring some money to buy other things. I would pack my passport in case I had to travel. Then I would get a first aid kit, a flashlight and a blanket. I would pack my watch. I would pack my warm rain jacket if it got cold. After that, I would get tarps, so I could camp. I would also pack some food and some other items that I might need. These are the things I might bring.
